We caught up with newlyweds Renu and Sunil to share their memories of their beautiful Wedding Day and their hunt to find the perfect person to make the cake of their dreams!

On 16th September 2018 Renu and Sunil made their vows in front of their family and friends. One year earlier and having stolen Renu’s heart, Sunil proposed on Christmas morning 2017 in the most festive way possible.. dressed in full Santa suit (beard and all)!

Reminiscing, Renu said “Sunil knew how I loved Christmas and he planned this special moment that I will forever cherish!”

From the moment the couple got engaged, the ‘wedding planning wheels’ were set in full motion! They decided to put their trust in luxury decor company Peekaboo Events Ltd and once the date was set and the venue booked at Prestige Banqueting Suite Birmingham, the couple could then enjoy their engagement and the run up to their wedding.

There was however, one part of the wedding that the couple wanted to select and arrange themselves – the cake.

“…a few months before our Wedding, it was Sunil’s 30th Birthday and I knew I had to do something special. I saw all these images of extravagant birthday cakes from other cake makers but something was missing – I was determined to find a cake for Sunil that neither he, or our families had had before. So, I searched Instagram in a hunt to find a talented Cake Artist that showed precision and attention to detail. I always said, ‘if they can do clean sugar flower work, then they must be good’!

When I found Polly Lane Cakery, I could see how talented Lucy was..but I must say, when Sunil’s 30th Birthday Cake was delivered – I was shocked at just how talented! The cake was so intricate and detailed – she took all my suggestions on board and delivered perfection!”

Soon after, I was so pleased to meet the happy couple for their Wedding Cake Consultation. We discussed the overall theme for the wedding to be ‘Pretty Pastel Florals’ both beautiful and sophisticated. After the couples ideas were put to me, I designed a bespoke 5 tier couture Wedding Cake just for them.

Discussion did not just stop at design! This was going to be a BIG wedding (550 guests) so all guest tastes had to be catered for. The couple requested for a large portion of the cake to be eggless and this posed some logistical issues. Eggless cakes are notoriously crumbly and structurally unstable to hold all 5 tiers…

“…luckily, Lucy tackled this head on offering an option to have seperate sheet cakes or a mix of egg and eggless tiers – this worked perfectly for us as we got to try some of the amazing cake flavours that Lucy makes”

The couple selected two of our signature flavours across the tiers of their cake – Madagascan Vanilla and Red Velvet. The couple entrusted me to make their dream Wedding Cake – a task that I embarked on with conviction.

The Wedding Day soon came around, everything came together and fell perfectly into place (according to the Brides timetabled spreadsheet! haha!)

“We had a beautiful ceremony in the morning surrounded by our loving families. The emotions of being given away were quickly washed away by a game we play where my sisters steal the groom’s shoes and hold them ransom for money!”

Caught up in the arrival of their guests, the Bride and Groom were yet to see the cake;

“…before we even saw the cake, we had family coming up to us telling us it was amazing!”

Looking back on her Wedding Day, Renu shares; …”when I walked in with dancers and drummers by Nachda Sansaar ahead and family dancing with joy behind us, there I saw the cake for the first time…perfectly poised in the middle of the dancefloor and I fell in love with it! Exactly as planned, beautiful colours, perfected sugar flowers with that gorgeous hint of shimmer!

I had a moment as I stood behind the cake, where I realised that I did not once have to chase Lucy or even ask her if the cake had been delivered”

From Ceremony to Reception, the day was perfect – we could not have been any more grateful. The venue ensured everything ran smoothly, we had a Harpist welcoming guests, a surprise flash dance and amazing food. The day was filled with love, laughter, eating and dancing – just as we wished!”

On the couples experience with Lucy @ Polly Lane Cakery; “…I had complete trust in Lucy and she delivered beyond expectation. To this day, I am in awe of the beautiful Cakes and Cupcakes she still creates for us – I have continued to rely on Lucy to make us the most amazing cakes and look forward to having more!..(hint for Sunil..it’s my 30th this year! haha)

I would like to thank Renu and Sunil for sharing their beautiful Wedding Day memories and for their kind words. Thank you for letting me be a part of your special day
